Super 8 is having a major renaissance, so I wrote about it + filmed Super 8 processing BTS at Kodak’s motion picture lab - on Super 8 FILM too, of course!!!!!
Pitching this to WSJ in Jan 2024, the process from pitch to print was a wild, ~5 month ride. First working on it for The Exchange section, the story then bounced around a few desks, finally landing at Gear & Gadgets. When editor Daniel Varghese called in March asking if I’d be interested in writing the story as well (despite having never written a newspaper article before), I couldn’t say no!!!
What ensued was one of the biggest learning curves of my career. My first draft was 2.3k words LOL; the Super 8 camera I planned to use didn’t work at the shoot; and the editing process was a whirlwind!!! I will truly never forget this experience, and am so grateful for everyone who took part in it. I hope the piece + visuals serves the medium justice.
